FAQs: Online Family Mediation
Is online mediation legally recognised?
Yes. Online mediation follows the same legal process as in-person mediation. Agreements can be made legally binding if both parties choose to formalise them through the courts.
Do I have to be in the same place as the other person?
No. You can join from completely separate locations. Shuttle mediation can also be used, where you don’t interact directly.
What if we are not comfortable talking publicly online?
Your mediator is trained to facilitate difficult conversations and ensure that both parties are heard. One-on-one sessions can be organised too.
Online mediation for arrangements relating to children.
Yes. It is most often used to agree on parenting plans, living arrangements and communication while always keeping the best interests of the child at heart.
What technology do I need?
Just a stable internet connection, a phone/tablet/laptop, and a private space. We’ll guide you through everything beforehand.
How long does online mediation last?
While some cases can be resolved in one or two sessions, others may require several meetings, depending on their complexity.
What if we don’t reach a deal?
Mediation can at least clarify the issues. Yes, there are other avenues (such as legal advice or court) if necessary, but many cases find resolution at least partly through mediation.
Is online mediation safe and confidential?
Yes. Sessions are conducted via secure platforms, and all discussions remain confidential except in specific legal circumstances.
